Aerial work platform, MEWP or truck-mounted platform – the terms at a glance

Anyone looking to rent an aerial work platform will come across different names for the same equipment, depending on the industry and region. The name does not decide the choice – the design does – but you should still be able to place the terms:

  • Aerial work platform (Dutch: hoogwerker) is the umbrella term for all mobile lifting machines that safely take people and materials to height.
  • Mobile elevating work platform is the term used in the standard. NEN-EN 280 refers to mobile elevating work platforms, known internationally as MEWP.
  • Truck-mounted platform (Dutch: autohoogwerker) is the term common in building services, at municipalities and energy suppliers – it usually refers to platforms on a truck chassis and telescopic boom lifts with great reach.
  • Basket (Dutch: werkbak) is often used on site as shorthand for the whole machine.
  • Vehicle lift (Dutch: hefbrug) is also heard in everyday speech. In technical usage, however, it means the fixed vehicle lift in a car workshop – not the work-at-height equipment discussed here. More on the difference between 'vehicle lift' and 'aerial work platform': Vehicle lift rental.

In aerial work platform rental we distinguish by design: scissor lifts for vertical lifting with a large platform, articulating boom lifts for working over obstacles, telescopic boom lifts for maximum reach, plus mast, spider and truck-mounted platforms for special applications. Which design suits your job depends on working height, outreach, load capacity and ground conditions.

Renting a long-reach aerial work platform – which design suits your job?

Anyone looking to rent a long-reach platform almost always means a machine that goes high, reaches far and often works at changing locations. The right design comes down to three questions – how often the location changes, what the ground can bear and whether there are obstacles in the way.

Truck-mounted platforms are the classic aerial platform on a truck chassis. They drive themselves between sites, are set up on outriggers in minutes and need no separate transport. This pays off as soon as several locations are visited in one day – typical for street lighting, utility networks, advertising installations and municipal maintenance.

Articulating boom lifts are the platform for anything that cannot be reached freely from below. The articulated boom guides the basket over pipework, canopies or machinery. Available with electric, diesel and hybrid drive up to more than 48 m working height.

Telescopic boom lifts deliver the greatest straight reach. Where height and outreach count and the path to the work point is clear, they are the fastest and most stable solution – with us up to 57 m working height.

Spider lifts are the platform for sensitive ground. Low dead weight, variable outriggers and a narrow chassis that fits through standard doors – in demand on parquet, tiles, green spaces and in heritage conservation.

What does it cost to rent a long-reach aerial work platform?

The rate follows the same factors as for any aerial work platform: design, working height, outreach, drive type and rental period. Two special points apply to long-reach platforms. First, truck-mounted platforms need no machine transport, but the driver needs the required Dutch driving licence category. Second, the outreach shifts the permitted basket load – two machines with the same working height can differ greatly in practical use.

You will find the full breakdown further down under 'What does it cost to rent an aerial work platform?'. Tell us the working height, required outreach, ground conditions, rental period and site location – and you will receive a quote that lists equipment rental, transport and additional services separately.

Which aerial work platform do you need? Five questions lead to the right design

Our rental fleet covers working heights from 6 to 57 metres in six designs. Instead of working through model lists, five questions get you to the right choice faster – they are the same questions our advisers ask on the phone.

  1. Can the work point be reached freely from below? Yes – then a scissor lift is sufficient: it lifts purely vertically and offers the largest platform. No, there is pipework, canopies or machinery in the way – then you need the articulated boom of an articulating boom lift.

  2. How far do you need to reach sideways? If straight reach at great height is what counts, the telescopic boom lift is the fastest and most stable solution. If the basket has to be offset sideways and guided around corners, the articulating boom lift remains the choice.

  3. What can the ground bear? Sensitive floors, parquet, tiles or green spaces call for a spider lift with low dead weight and variable outriggers. On smooth warehouse floors, electric machines with non-marking tyres are used; on shell construction sites and rough terrain, four-wheel-drive diesel versions.

  4. Does the site location change several times a day? Then a truck-mounted platform drives itself between locations, and no separate transport is needed. If the machine stays in one place for days, a self-propelled platform is usually more economical.

  5. How narrow is the access? If doors, gates or lifts have to be passed, narrow models from 0.76 m width are an option – or a mast lift, which is light, narrow and quick to set up.

A practical tip: the working height is around two metres above the platform height. If you work at a height of 12 m, you need a machine with 10 m platform height. Also add up people, tools and materials – for two fitters with tools, 350 to 450 kg is realistic.

Unsure about one of the five questions? Then give us a call. Choosing the right machine usually saves more overall than the difference in rental price between two classes.

Scissor lifts: efficient vertical lifting for industry and warehousing

Scissor lifts are the first choice for work that requires a large platform area and a high load capacity. Luibl Rental offers both electrically driven models for indoor use and powerful diesel scissor lifts for rough terrain.

A technological highlight for the logistics sector is the HAB S320-12E. With an impressive working height of 32.43 metres and a width of only 1.20 metres, this special machine provides access to the narrowest aisles of high-bay warehouses. For classic maintenance work, the Magni ES1823RT offers a working height of 18 metres and a load capacity of 680 kg, making work with heavy tools and several people on the platform easily possible.

For outdoor work on unpaved ground we use rough-terrain diesel scissor lifts such as the Holland Lift Megastar G320. These machines feature four-wheel drive, oscillating axles and hydraulic outriggers to compensate for uneven ground and ensure a stable working position at heights of up to 33.70 metres.

Articulating boom lifts: maximum manoeuvrability around complex obstacles

Wherever pipework, machinery or building structures block direct access, articulating boom lifts come into their own. Thanks to their variable articulation point (up-and-over), they reach work areas that remain inaccessible to rigid telescopic booms. The Manitou 200 ATJ e represents the top of modern work-at-height technology without local emissions. With a working height of 20 metres and an outreach of 11.57 metres, it is ideal for use in enclosed halls or noise-sensitive areas. Luibl Rental places particular value on the integrated safety systems:

  • The Secondary Protection System (SPS) has a sensitive wire in front of the control panel that immediately stops all movements on contact to prevent crushing accidents.
  • Non-marking tyres protect sensitive industrial floors from abrasion and damage while driving.

When maximum horizontal reach and speed are the priority, telescopic boom lifts are the optimal solution. In sectors such as shipbuilding or steel structure assembly, these machines are indispensable. Luibl Rental offers special machines in this segment with working heights of up to 57 metres. A proven model is the Manitou 280 TJ, which impresses with 27.73 metres of working height and more than 21 metres of outreach. The intuitive controls and high stability allow precise manoeuvring, even at the limits of the working range.

Special solutions: truck-mounted platforms and spider lifts

For projects with frequently changing locations or extreme requirements for ground protection, Luibl Rental offers specialised work-at-height equipment:

  • Truck-mounted platforms (platforms on a truck chassis): models such as the Palfinger P 300KS stand out for their rapid readiness for use and their ability to drive themselves between sites. They are particularly in demand among municipalities and energy suppliers for maintenance work in public spaces.
  • Spider lifts (tracked platforms): thanks to their low dead weight and variable outriggers, they are ideal for use on parquet, tiles or sensitive green spaces. Thanks to their narrow chassis, many models fit through standard doors and still reach considerable heights.

Occupational safety and legal framework

At Luibl Rental, safety is not an optional feature but the foundation of every rental. Under the Working Conditions Decree, Chapter 7 (work equipment) and the wider Dutch occupational health and safety legislation, aerial work platforms are subject to strict inspection and operating requirements. Every Luibl Rental machine undergoes a function check after each use and is subject to periodic inspection of work equipment under the Working Conditions Decree by independent experts. For business customers it is important to know that the risk assessment at the site is the responsibility of the employer. We support you by providing all necessary technical data sheets and load charts. We also point out that the operator of an aerial work platform – regardless of what the machine is called in the company – must have the required competence, in line with applicable Dutch health and safety rules. Luibl Rental provides an operator briefing on handover; IPAF remains the international reference.

In practice: efficient maintenance in high-bay logistics

A leading European e-commerce service provider faced the challenge of maintaining the conveyor technology in its central warehouse at a height of 30 metres while ongoing operations on the lower levels had to continue undisturbed. Conventional scaffolding would have caused weeks of closures and immense costs. Luibl Rental delivered a HAB S320-12E electric scissor lift. The challenge was to bring the machine in through a standard sectional door and drive it on a floor that allowed only a limited point load. Thanks to its compact design and precise controls, the technicians were able to reach the critical points at more than 32 metres safely. Because the machine works without local emissions, the air in the hall stayed clean and parallel operations could continue. The project was completed successfully – with a time saving of more than 80 % compared with fixed scaffolding.

Your route to the optimal rental solution at Luibl Rental

Our advisers support you in choosing the right work-at-height equipment for your specific project. Aerial work platform rental is our core business – whether you rent a platform for a single day or commit to a machine for several months on long-term rental. Together with you, we analyse working height, reach, ground conditions and load capacity to avoid the wrong rental choice and increase the cost-effectiveness of your project.

What does it cost to rent an aerial work platform?

There is no flat price for aerial work platform rental – the rental price is made up of a few clearly identifiable factors. If you know them, you can compare quotes properly and avoid the wrong rental choice.

What determines the rental price

  • Design and working height: a compact electric scissor lift for indoor work at 8 m is in a completely different class from a telescopic boom lift with 57 m working height. Within a design, the rate rises with working height, reach and load capacity.
  • Drive type: electric, diesel and hybrid machines differ in purchase and running costs – and therefore in rental price. Rough-terrain four-wheel-drive machines are priced above comparable indoor machines.
  • Rental period: daily, weekly and monthly rates are tiered. The longer the term, the lower the calculated daily rate. From several months onwards, long-term rental with its own conditions is usually the more economical option.
  • Transport: delivery and collection are listed separately from the equipment rental. They depend on the site location, the transport weight and the accessibility of the site.
  • Additional services: machinery breakdown insurance, attachments and an on-site briefing are calculated separately.

What is included in the rental price

  • an inspected machine with valid periodic inspection of work equipment under the Working Conditions Decree and complete technical documentation
  • maintenance and periodic inspections during the rental period
  • technical advice on equipment selection before the rental
  • technical support throughout the entire rental period

We can give you a reliable price as soon as working height, load capacity, ground conditions, rental period and site location are fixed. With these five details you will receive an itemised quote that lists equipment rental, transport and additional services separately.

FAQ: aerial work platforms

chevronDown

Can I rent an aerial work platform as a private individual?

No, at Luibl only businesses and companies can rent aerial work platforms.

How much does it cost to rent an aerial work platform?

Rental prices depend on the type of machine, the rental period and the transport effort. A small scissor lift is available for a low daily rate, while specialised telescopic boom lifts are priced individually. Luibl Rental will be happy to prepare a transparent quote with no hidden costs.

What driving licence do I need for an aerial work platform?

For self-propelled aerial work platforms (scissor/telescopic) on closed sites, no driving licence is required, but the required operator competence is. If you rent a truck-mounted platform, a category B licence (up to 3.5 t) or a C1/C licence (over 3.5 t) is required depending on the gross weight.

How is delivery organised?

We operate our own low-loader fleet. The Luibl Rental team delivers the machine directly to the location on the requested date and collects it again at the end of the rental.

Do I need to insure the aerial work platform?

Our rental machines are insured as standard. All that remains is an excess in the event of damage; the amount is stated in your rental agreement. Optionally, we offer liability limitations to reduce your risk further.

What happens if the rental machine has a technical defect?

Should a breakdown occur despite our strict maintenance, Luibl Rental's mobile service team will be on hand promptly. We repair on site or replace the machine at short notice to keep the stoppage on your site as short as possible.

Can I rent an aerial work platform for just one day?

Yes. Daily rental is just as possible as weekly, monthly and long-term rental. Rates are scaled: the longer the term, the lower the calculated daily rate. For single days of use we also charge transport to your site – for short rental periods it is therefore worth bundling several jobs.

When do I need a truck-mounted platform instead of a self-propelled platform?

Truck-mounted platforms are worthwhile when several locations are visited within one day. The platform is mounted on the chassis and drives itself between locations, so no separate transport is needed. This is typical for maintenance work on street lighting, cables or advertising installations. If, on the other hand, the machine stays in one place for days, a self-propelled platform is usually the more economical choice.

What does delivery of an aerial work platform cost?

Delivery and collection are listed separately from the machine rental. The amount depends on the distance to your site, the transport weight of the machine and the accessibility of the work location. Transport is handled by our own low-loader fleet, so you agree the delivery date and set-up location directly with us – without going through a freight forwarder.

Which aerial work platform is suitable for working over obstacles?

As soon as pipework, canopies, machines or racking block the direct route, the articulating boom lift is the right type. Its articulated boom first takes the platform upwards, then over the obstacle and then telescopically to the target point. Scissor lifts, by contrast, work purely vertically and are suitable when the work point can be reached freely from below.

What is the difference between an aerial work platform, a mobile elevating work platform and a MEWP?

In practice, all three terms refer to the same technology. Mobile elevating work platform is the standard designation according to NEN-EN 280, internationally MEWP. Aerial work platform is the term commonly used in practice, by municipalities and energy companies, and is also the umbrella term; it often refers to truck-mounted platforms or telescopic boom lifts with a long reach. Not included is the vehicle lift in a car workshop: that is a stationary device and not access-at-height equipment.
