Telehandler attachments – the quick-coupler system as an investment multiplier

A telehandler without attachments is a lifting machine. With the right range of attachments it becomes a crane, aerial work platform, excavator, loader and sweeper – on the same chassis, on the same working day. The hydraulic quick coupler is not an accessory but system architecture: it defines how many specialised machines a single telehandler can replace in the fleet.

The quick-coupler system: how it works and what it means legally

Technical principle

The hydraulic quick coupler sits on the boom head. Two hydraulic cylinders tension a locking contour that engages in the standardised mount of every compatible attachment. Attachment changes without leaving the cab, without tools, in under 60 seconds. Hydraulic connections couple automatically on locking; electrical plug connections for weighing systems or controls do the same.

CE conformity of the combination: the overlooked legal point

This is the most common compliance error in telehandler operation: not only the carrier machine and not only the attachment must be CE-compliant – but the combination of both. The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC treats carrier and attachment as one complete machine as soon as they work together.

Consequences for the buyer:

  • Attachments from other manufacturers without manufacturer approval for the specific carrier machine can invalidate the CE conformity of the overall system

  • The periodic inspection of work equipment under the Working Conditions Decree covers all attachments used; attachments that are not listed will be rejected

  • In the event of damage, the user is liable if non-approved combinations were used

Luibl supplies only attachments with manufacturer approval for the respective carrier machines and with complete CE documentation for the combination.

The attachment range in detail

Pallet forks – basic equipment

Standard version with fixed fork width for Euro pallets (800 × 1,200 mm). Decisive when buying: the residual load capacity after deducting the attachment's own weight. A 4 t fork carriage itself weighs 180 – 320 kg; this weight is deducted from the load chart of the carrier machine.

Variants:

Fork positioner (hydraulic): fork width infinitely adjustable from the cab; essential for changing pallet formats and industrial applications

Wide forks: for oversized loads such as formwork elements, steel girders, pipe bundles

Side shift: horizontal shifting of the load without moving the machine; precise positioning in warehouses and during assembly work

Lifting hook and winch – the crane function

A lifting hook with a freely suspended load turns the telehandler into a lifting appliance under applicable Dutch health and safety rules. A winch additionally allows controlled lowering and lifting from pits or shafts.

Technical requirements for operation:

Load handling with lifting accessories (chains, round slings) in line with applicable Dutch health and safety rules

A freely suspended load must not be travelled with – the machine must be stationary

Winch attachments require their own periodic inspection under the Working Conditions Decree in addition to the telehandler inspection

Work platform – MEWP function with 360° slewing

The work platform with CE marking to EN 280 turns the telehandler into an aerial work platform. Load capacity typically 200 – 350 kg (1–2 persons + tools). On the roto telehandler, the platform rotates with the superstructure – full 360° positioning without repositioning the machine.

Critical legal point: when operating with a personnel platform, the requirements of EN 280 apply in full – including the periodic inspection of work equipment under the Working Conditions Decree as a MEWP, operator instruction to ISO 18878 and work instructions for lifting persons. The user must explicitly include this in the risk assessment in line with applicable Dutch health and safety rules.

Bucket – earthmoving and material handling

Tipping bucket (standard): for sand, gravel, soil, rubble; capacity 0.3 – 1.2 m³ depending on the model

High-tip bucket: empties over obstacles and into high containers; tipping height up to 3.5 m above ground

Grab bucket: for lumpy material such as stones, tree stumps, demolition debris; hydraulically closing

Bucket with integrated weighing system: for recycling, landfills and bulk material intake with billing accuracy

Concrete skip and mortar container

For concreting on hard-to-reach floor areas and in shaft structures. Capacity 0.3 – 1.5 m³. Discharge via slide gate, controlled from the cab or by pull cable. An alternative to a stationary crane for small quantities and frequent changes of position.

Clamp fork and pipe grab

For cylindrical loads: concrete pipes, steel pipes, logs, coils. Hydraulically closing clamp jaws; the load hangs in the clamp without lifting accessories. Advantage over a lifting hook: no slinger required, faster handling, more precise positioning.

Sweeper and snow clearing

Sweeper attachments with a hydraulically driven brush set for site access roads, depots and open areas. Working width 1.5 – 2.5 m. Snow plough as the counterpart for winter operation.

Residual value: why the attachment set affects the resale price

Telehandlers with a complete, manufacturer-compliant attachment set achieve 15 – 25 % higher sale prices on the used market than single machines without accessories. The reason: the buyer takes over a ready-to-use system with documented CE conformity – and does not need to buy additional attachments or check compatibility.

For financial planning this means: renting instead of buying protects liquidity. On sale, attachments increase the residual value of the overall package disproportionately.

Normative requirements

  • Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC – CE conformity for the combination of carrier machine and attachment; manufacturer approval required

  • EN 1459-1:2017 – the load chart must show the attachment weight as a deduction

  • Periodic inspection of work equipment under the Working Conditions Decree – covers all attachments used

  • Applicable Dutch health and safety rules – additional inspection when using a lifting hook and winch

  • EN 280:2013+A1:2015 – applies in full when operating with a personnel platform

Scope of delivery and advice

Luibl supplies attachments only with:

  • Manufacturer approval for the specific carrier machine (in writing)

  • CE declaration of conformity for the combination

  • Operating manual in German

  • Entry in the inspection log of the carrier machine

Advice on the optimum attachment configuration based on the application profile, hydraulic data of the carrier machine and budget. Packages of carrier machine + attachments can be arranged on request as overall financing.

FAQ: telehandler attachments

chevronDown

Which attachments are available for telehandlers?

Common attachments are pallet forks, bucket, load hook, lattice jib, work platform and winch. Which attachments fit a particular machine depends on the quick-coupling system and the controls – not every attachment can be used on every model.

How does an attachment change the load capacity?

Considerably. Every attachment adds its own weight and shifts the load centre forward. Both reduce the residual load capacity, and disproportionately so as the boom is extended further. Every combination of machine and attachment therefore has its own load chart.

May I lift people with a work basket on the telehandler?

Only with a personnel basket approved for this purpose and under the conditions of the Working Conditions Decree, Chapter 7 (work equipment). For regular work at height, an aerial work platform is the safer and more productive machine - the work basket on the telehandler is intended for occasional installation work.

Are attachments charged separately?

Yes. They are priced separately from the base rental. This is one of the most common reasons why two quotes do not appear comparable at first glance - when comparing, check whether the same attachments are included.

Can I change attachments during the rental period?

Generally, yes. Mention your requirements when you enquire, and we will deliver the right attachments at the same time or organise the change. A separate transport later on is more expensive than a combined delivery.

Do I need a separate briefing for each attachment?

The operator instruction must cover the attachments actually used. On handover, we brief your staff on the machine and the attachments supplied and hand over the corresponding load charts.

Which attachment do I need for bulk material?

The bucket. If material handling is required on a permanent basis, however, a wheel loader is the more efficient machine - the telehandler plays to its strengths where work also has to be done at height or over obstacles.

Are the attachments inspected?

Yes. Lifting accessories are subject to their own inspection requirements and are inspected and documented by us together with the machine. You receive the records with the machine.
