Unpaved ground, mud after heavy rain, loads on grassland: a standard industrial forklift will not get far here. Rough-terrain forklifts are built for exactly these conditions – with four-wheel drive, high ground clearance and heavy-tread tyres. At Luibl, you can rent 4x4 forklifts from Ausa and Manitou with 3 or 5 tonnes of load capacity, delivered throughout the Netherlands by our own low-loader fleet.

Why rent a rough-terrain forklift?

The classic counterbalance forklift is designed for warehouses and paved traffic areas. As soon as the ground becomes soft, uneven or sloping, it loses traction. Rough-terrain forklifts close this gap. They transport pallets, building materials, big bags and machine parts where the asphalt ends.

Typical applications:

  • Construction sites: shell construction logistics on still unpaved ground, material transport between storage area and installation point, supplying crews with bricks, mortar and steel.

  • Events: set-up on festival grounds, exhibition sites and outdoor locations – wherever grass or gravel defines the work location.

  • Agriculture and landscaping: handling feed bales, fertiliser sacks and paving pallets on farmyards and unpaved access roads.

  • Outdoor industrial storage: steel trading, timber yards, recycling yards – areas with gravel surfaces where standard forklifts reach their limits.

The distinction from the industrial forklift is clear: where wet conditions, gradients or loose ground come into play, four-wheel drive determines productivity and safety.

Our rental fleet: 4x4 power from Ausa and Manitou

For rough-terrain forklifts, Luibl focuses on two manufacturers with a clear profile. Ausa is regarded as a compact all-rounder with a Spanish engineering tradition and a strong position in medium load capacities. Manitou invented the rough-terrain forklift and covers the entire spectrum from site forklift to heavy-duty machine.

The compact all-rounder: Ausa C300H x4 (3 tonnes)

The Ausa C300H x4 is the entry model in the 4x4 forklift class. With 3,000 kg load capacity and a lift height of around 5 metres, it covers most tasks on medium-sized sites and in outdoor storage areas. Its true four-wheel drive (x4) distributes the drive power to all four wheels – making it reliable on gravel, grass and wet ground.

What sets it apart from classic industrial forklifts: the cornering control reduces travel speed depending on the turning radius, which reduces the risk of tipping when driving with a load on uneven terrain. The automatic fork levelling system returns the mast exactly to the vertical – relevant when picking up pallets precisely on sloping ground. The rollback protection prevents rolling back when starting off on a ramp.

For sites with limited space or event logistics in tight areas, the C300H x4 is the right choice.

The powerhouse for large sites: Manitou M50-4 (5 tonnes)

The Manitou M50-4 raises the load limit to 5,000 kg – also with a lift height of around 5 metres. It is the machine for large sites, heavy pallets and the handling of bulky goods such as steel beams, batches of bricks or machine assemblies. Permanent four-wheel drive delivers the power to the tyres even at full load and on unfavourable ground.

The Manitou design relies on a free-view mast for a clear view of the load and a hydrostatic travel drive that enables sensitive manoeuvring. At full load, the lowering safety valve automatically regulates the lowering speed – a function that makes the difference between controlled set-down and material damage with heavy loads.

The load centre and stability of the M50-4 are designed for heavy loads in outdoor use. For bridge construction sites, infrastructure projects and heavy goods trading, it is the standard solution.

Technical highlights: what rough-terrain forklifts need to deliver

A rough-terrain forklift is more than an industrial forklift with different tyres. Four factors determine its suitability for rough use.

Four-wheel drive (4x4): unlike the front-wheel drive of the warehouse forklift, 4x4 drives all four wheels. This prevents individual wheels from spinning in mud, sand or on turf. On gradients and when picking up loads from an uneven position, 4x4 ensures constant traction.

Ground clearance: rough-terrain forklifts have considerably more clearance between underbody and ground than warehouse forklifts. Stones, kerbs and bumps are driven over without the frame touching down. This massively reduces damage to hydraulic lines and the underbody.

Heavy-tread tyres: the tyre is the interface with the ground. Rough-terrain forklifts run on pneumatic tyres with a deep tread pattern. These dig into soft ground and offer sufficient grip on firm ground. Solid rubber tyres, as are common in halls, deliver no performance on rough terrain.

Diesel drive: the diesel engine delivers the torque that heavy loads need over uneven terrain. Electric rough-terrain forklifts are available for special applications, but most site work still runs on diesel – because of operating time, power and refuelling directly on site.

Each of these features contributes directly to productivity: a forklift that does not get stuck on site saves rental days and working time.

Safety and competence: what you need to know before use

Rough-terrain forklifts are work equipment within the meaning of the Working Conditions Decree, Chapter 7 (work equipment). Operation is reserved for persons with demonstrable competence as a forklift operator (to be ensured by the employer). Before first use on site, a workplace-specific briefing by the user is also recommended.

Periodic inspection of work equipment under the Working Conditions Decree is part of the vehicle documentation for all Luibl rental machines. For long-term rentals, Luibl takes care of the recurring inspection during the rental period. The machines therefore meet applicable Dutch health and safety rules.

On handover, Luibl provides a practical operator briefing; the competence of the forklift operator is ensured by the employer.

Rental process and logistics: delivery throughout the Netherlands by Luibl

Luibl operates its own low-loader fleet. For rough-terrain forklifts, this is more relevant than for most other machines: with four-wheel drive, high ground clearance and counterweight, they are heavy and bulky. Dependence on external hauliers often leads to delivery delays in practice.

How the rental works:

  • Enquiry: you tell us the work location, period of use, required load capacity and ground conditions. On this basis, Luibl recommends the right model – Ausa or Manitou, 3 or 5 tonnes.

  • Quote: transparent rental terms with a clear breakdown. No hidden costs, no surprising extra items. For long-term rentals, with periodic inspection and maintenance included in the package.

  • Delivery: our own low-loader fleet delivers to the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary and other European countries. Plannable dates – even for bulky large machines.

  • Operation: technicians can be deployed on site on request. In the event of technical problems or operating questions, downtime is reduced to a minimum.

  • Collection: punctual collection after the end of the rental by the same low-loader fleet.

For construction sites and industrial customers throughout the Netherlands, from Amsterdam via Utrecht to Eindhoven, delivery takes place at short notice – promptly if the machine is available.

Can I also use a rough-terrain forklift indoors?

In principle yes, if the hall is sufficiently ventilated. As Luibl's rough-terrain forklifts are diesel-powered, they produce emissions. Use in enclosed spaces without ventilation is not permitted. For emission-sensitive environments, electric telehandlers are available as an alternative in the Luibl rental fleet.

What licence do you need for a rough-terrain forklift?

Driving a rough-terrain forklift on company premises requires demonstrable competence of the forklift operator (to be ensured by the employer). For driving on public roads, a category B licence or another driving licence category required under Dutch rules is also needed, depending on the permissible maximum mass and design. For use on site only, the demonstrable competence of the operator is sufficient.

How much does it cost to rent a rough-terrain forklift?

Daily prices for a rough-terrain forklift start at around 120 euros excl. VAT, depending on the model and rental period. Weekly and monthly rates are proportionally much lower. The actual rental depends on load capacity (3 or 5 tonnes), rental period, delivery distance and any additional services required (operator briefing, fuel supply, periodic inspection of work equipment under the Working Conditions Decree). A tailored quote on request gives you the binding price.

When is a four-wheel-drive forklift necessary?

Whenever the work area is not fully paved. Specifically: in mud, wet clay, turf, gravel, sand or on sloping ground. In winter, too, four-wheel drive provides decisive traction on snow and ice. For pure warehouse logistics or fully asphalted yards, a normal industrial forklift is sufficient – the four-wheel-drive forklift is more expensive to rent and run.

Which load capacity is the right one?

The decision depends on the heaviest load that is regularly moved – including pallet and safety margin. For standard Euro pallets with building materials or animal feed, the 3-tonner (Ausa C300H x4) is sufficient in most cases. For steel beams, heavy pallets, bulky big bags or large machine assemblies, the 5-tonner (Manitou M50-4) is the right choice. If in doubt, do a quick calculation or clarify it in the quote discussion – overloading is the most common cause of accidents in forklift operation.

Conclusion: request your individual rental quote now

Rough-terrain forklifts are specialist machines. The right choice between the Ausa C300H x4 and the Manitou M50-4, between 3 and 5 tonnes of load capacity, between short-term and long-term rental depends on your specific project. A consultation with Luibl brings the right machine to the work location – including delivery planning, periodic inspection and technical support.
