Diesel articulating boom lift rental – maximum reach for rough terrain
Anyone who needs to reach over a pipe bridge on site, access a facade behind trees or install a steel structure at 40 m height will not get far with a straight telescopic boom lift. This is where diesel articulating boom lifts come in: four-wheel drive, articulated boom, oscillating axle and working heights up to 49 m – as rental machines from the Luibl rental fleet, delivered throughout the Netherlands and Europe.
Why diesel articulating boom lifts are indispensable for outdoor work
On paved hall floors, electric platforms are sufficient. As soon as gravel, clay, snow or slopes come into play, the situation changes. Diesel articulating boom lifts are designed for exactly this field of application – for three reasons:
-
Independent of the power grid: on shell construction sites, in steel halls without a power connection or during tunnel and route works, an external power supply is rarely available. The diesel engine runs autonomously; one tank lasts several shifts.
-
Torque for gradients and ground conditions: Models such as the Genie Z45/25 XC or the Z51/30J RT handle gradients of up to 45 %. On gravel or soft ground, the advantage of a combustion engine over battery solutions is clear.
-
Load capacity and reach in one machine: Heavy-duty versions such as the Manitou 160 ATJ Plus lift 408 kg in the basket – enough for two technicians plus tools and material. The outreach of this model is 8.52 m.
Compared with a straight telescopic boom lift, the decisive advantage comes into play when there is an obstacle between the machine and the work point – a roof overhang, a utility line, a projection. This is exactly where the articulating boom becomes the tool of choice.
Up-and-over height and articulation point – the technical difference
The terms working height and up-and-over height are often confused in rental quotes. For the selection, however, the distinction is worth real money.
Working height is the theoretical reach height of a person standing in the basket – that is, platform height plus 2 m. For the Genie ZX-135/70 this is 43 m at a platform height of around 41 m. This figure appears in the data sheet and in the rental quote.
Up-and-over height describes something else: how high can the basket be raised while at the same time reaching sideways over an obstacle? This is where the articulation point (riser) comes in. Unlike a straight telescopic boom lift, an articulating boom lift has one or more additional pivot points on the boom. This allows the basket to be guided over edges, railings or roof projections without repositioning the machine.
The outreach depends directly on the model. Examples from the Luibl rental fleet:
-
Genie Z45/25J RT (16 m working height): bridges a lateral distance of around 8 m
-
Manitou 160 ATJ Plus (16.21 m): outreach 8.52 m with 408 kg basket load
-
Magni DAB28RT (28 m): basket rotation up to 180°, continuous 360° turret rotation
-
Genie ZX-135/70 (43 m): four steering modes including crab steering and coordinated four-wheel steering
For models with a large working height, negative reach is also relevant – that is, working below the set-up level, for example when inspecting the underside of bridges or working on slopes. The Luibl diesel range offers negative working heights down to -6 m.
Applications in industry and construction
Diesel articulating boom lifts are not all-purpose machines. They play to their strengths in clearly defined scenarios:
-
Steel construction and hall assembly: placing beams, tightening connections, inspecting welds – the basket load of 230 to 450 kg allows tools and material to be taken right to the work point.
-
Facade work on complex geometries: projections, balconies and roof overhangs are reached from below or around with the articulating geometry, without repositioning the machine.
-
Maintenance of utility lines and power poles: this is where negative reach is used when working from an earth bank or the crest of a dyke.
-
Bridge inspection and tunnel construction: long reaches of up to 49 m and continuous turret rotation allow precise positioning even in confined conditions.
-
Industrial assembly in halls without a power supply: during the construction phase, before the hall infrastructure is commissioned, diesel is often the only option.
Off-road capability through four-wheel drive and oscillating axle
What really sets a diesel articulating boom lift apart from an indoor machine is the chassis. Three components are decisive here:
-
Permanent four-wheel drive: engine power is distributed to all four wheels. This clearly improves traction on gravel, clay, wet ground or snow compared with rear-wheel drive.
-
Active oscillating axle system: on uneven terrain, the oscillating axle compensates for ground irregularities so that all four wheels stay in contact with the ground. Without this system, the machine rocks on bumps and stability decreases.
-
Rough-terrain tyres: coarse-tread tyres with an off-road profile are standard. Some models (such as the Magni DAB28RT) are fitted with non-marking tyres that leave no tracks even on sensitive surfaces – useful for mixed indoor/outdoor use.
Gradeability ranges from 30 % to 45 % depending on the model. Important: these values apply to travel with the boom retracted. Anyone working on a slope must level the machine first – stability is monitored via the load chart and tilt sensor.
Selection criteria for the right diesel aerial work platform
The right machine follows from four parameters that should be clarified before every enquiry:
-
Required working height including a safety margin: better 2 m in reserve than working at the limit. A 16 m platform for a 14 m task is a better choice than a 43 m machine that is considerably less manoeuvrable.
-
Basket load by number of people plus material: two technicians, cordless drivers, fixings, fall protection equipment – realistically that quickly adds up to 250 to 350 kg. Models with a 230 kg basket load (Manitou 200 ATJ) are then no longer sufficient.
-
Outreach for obstacles that are actually present: here the data sheet or advice based on the site geometry is essential. Load charts show which basket load is permitted at which boom position.
-
Transport dimensions and access: a ZX-135/70 with a total weight of more than 20 t requires different low-loaders and access routes than a 16 m Genie. The transport dimensions must match the site access.
On sensitive ground, it pays to look at the ground pressure per wheel. Where the ground is critical, spider lifts are a sensible alternative – these are also available in the Luibl range.
Regulations, instruction and operator competence
Anyone operating an aerial work platform must have demonstrable competence and must have been instructed by the employer, in line with applicable Dutch health and safety rules. In practice this covers theoretical instruction and practical exercises; the employer ensures and documents the operator's competence.
The international operator licence is the PAL Card issued by IPAF (International Powered Access Federation), which many main contractors require in practice – in addition to the competence to be ensured by the employer.
Further relevant regulations:
-
Working Conditions Decree, work at height: use of aerial work platforms in line with applicable Dutch health and safety rules
-
NEN-EN 280: safety requirements, calculations and tests for mobile elevating work platforms
-
Working Conditions Decree, Chapter 7 (work equipment): legal framework for provision and use
-
Other countries (e.g. Austria, AUVA / AM-VO): comparable requirements under the national work equipment regulations
A visual and functional check is recommended before use. The periodic inspection of work equipment under the Working Conditions Decree is documented on delivery for Luibl rental machines.
Logistics, service and delivery areas
Luibl operates its own fleet of low-loaders. With diesel articulating boom lifts this is no minor point: machines from 16 m working height typically weigh 7.5 t or more, and the ZX-135/70 weighs over 20 t. External hauliers often deliver within vague time windows – our own fleet allows predictable delivery dates, including across borders.
Delivery areas: the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary, Luxembourg and other European countries.
Service during the rental period: in the event of technical faults or for operator instruction, technicians can be sent on site on request. This is particularly relevant for large machines, where downtime puts the daily schedule of the entire site at risk.
Long-term rental: for projects lasting several months, long-term terms are available, including periodic inspection and maintenance. This makes sense on large sites where the same machine is committed for the entire construction phase.
