How long does a forklift course take?

Short answer: 1 to 5 days – depending on format and prior knowledge

A forklift course takes between one and five days – depending on the chosen course format and the participant's prior knowledge. The most common question, “Can it be done in one day?”, cannot be answered across the board: it depends on the individual case. In the Netherlands, the employer ensures the demonstrable competence of the forklift operator; a course is the usual way to achieve this.

Who is the one-day course suitable for?

The one-day course is not a shortcut for everyone – it has specific prerequisites:

Suitable for: people who have demonstrably worked with forklifts or similar industrial trucks for at least 1–2 years and only need the formal proof (certificate).

Not suitable for: people with no experience at all. Combining theory and practical training in a single day overwhelms beginners – the risk of failing the exam rises considerably.

Providers differ: not every course provider offers the one-day course. Some require written proof of prior experience. If in doubt, check before booking.

Theory and practice: how the time is split

For the 2-day standard course (typical split):

Day 1:

  • Theory: 4–5 hours (regulations, technology, stability, operational hazards)
  • Introductory practice: 2–3 hours (first driving exercises without load)

Day 2:

  • Practical training: 4–5 hours (picking up loads, stacking, practising the exam course)
  • Theory exam: approx. 45–60 minutes
  • Practical exam: approx. 15–20 minutes per person

For the one-day course: theory and practice are compressed: theory usually 2–3 hours, practical training 4–5 hours, exam in the afternoon. This assumes that the basic knowledge is already in place.

FAQs on the duration of a forklift course

Can you complete a forklift course in one day?

Yes, if there is sufficient prior experience and the provider offers one-day courses. For beginners without practice, the 2-day standard course is the more reliable choice.

How long does the exam take?

The theory exam takes 45–60 minutes (25–30 multiple-choice questions). The practical exam takes 15–25 minutes per person. Including preparation and wrap-up, you should plan half a day for the exam day.

Does work experience shorten the training?

Indirectly, yes: anyone with demonstrable prior experience can be admitted to the one-day course. A formal reduction of the course content set by the provider is not possible.

How quickly will I receive the document?

Participants usually receive the certificate directly at the end of the course day or by post a few days after passing the exam. Some providers issue a provisional proof immediately and send the original document later.
